A Clinial Study of Lactobacillus Acidophilus in Acute Watery Diarrhea in Children
Park Ihi-Sung

Abstract
Purpose: Acute diarrhea is a major problem in children worldwide. But there are no effective drug for the treatment of acute diarrhea in children. I want to know the effect of Lactobacillus LB for the treatment of acute diarrhea. So, I evaluated the clinical efficacy of orally administered Lactobacillus LB for the treatment of acute diarrhea in children.

Methods: From September 2007 to February 2008 at Soonchunhyang University Gumi Hospital 40 children aged from 3 months to 5 years with acute diarrhea were enrolled in this study. The patients were randomized to one of two groups to receive either 0.5¡¿108 colony forming unit of Lactobacillus LB or matching placebo on admission and every 8
hours during hospitalization.

Results: The mean duration of watery diarrhea after initiation of treatment was 3.1 days in the Lactobacillus LB (n=20) vs. 3.8 days in the placebo group (n=20) (P=0.034). By the fourth day of treatment, watery diarrhea ceased in all patients receiving L. acidophilus LB compared to 30 percent of those reciving placebo (P=0.008).

Conclusion: L. acidophilus LB seems to be an effective therapeutic agent in acute diarrhea in children. Further studies are needed with more patients to confirm the present findings.
